PROLOGUE
He lived through history and seen its pages filled with stories and different variations of him. Yet none knows who he really is. He doesn’t really think he has a name anymore. But it was better this way. He works shrouded by the darkness and thinks he has more freedom for even He does not approve of his ways. He was not so foolish to abide to some rules that hold no consequences to the world he now resides in. The creatures that inhibit this realm are merely his playthings. There was nothing more satisfying than the sound of crushed bones and screams of pain echoing through his hellish boudoir. Why bother saving worms like these?
Mortals…The imbeciles that they are, they were only good enough for fodder.
How could anyone spend an eternity trying to protect them was beyond him. Ironically, no matter how that that foolish prince fights for them, he still needs their blood to survive…It was a vain effort. He may not need the Ancients to increase his powers and reign but he definitely needs the unity of the underworld and their pledge of loyalty to him. He wanted nothing more than to start another war between the realms…the hunger for bloodshed and the destruction that comes with it…
Shadows by the Moon
He sighed as the thick, metallic tasting liquid ran down his throat, the stench of the animal rotting away did not disturb him the slightest. He knows he will not last long without human blood and he has been prowling the streets looking for a suitable victim.
Tainted blood was what he need, man with their hearts corrupted by greed…selling their souls to the devil to quench their desires for that moment of pleasure. He hates the taste of their blood but he cannot bring himself to kill innocents. Although the doors of heaven are closed to him and that he is a creation of the devil’s work, his refusal to sin anymore than he already had was often a obstacle to his body’s fight for survival. He had no choice but to continue prowling the alleys for the fallen.
Passed the centuries he survived, he has seen history created and empires fall, he has found love and lost love. Sometimes, he wished so badly for someone to end his long lonely existence. There had been none that was powerful enough to grant him the lethal blow after Kang-In…although he has been hearing about a new breed of hunters and the leader of their group was one of the greatest to emerge since Kang-In appeared more than a thousand years ago. He wonders would he be able to take him down since Kang-In failed.
Their battle was long and ferocious, sadly Kang-In was only human and there was only so much damage he could take. His last attack would have been successful but he was badly injured and lacked the strength to push the silver rod fully into his heart. Now, he doubts that any other hunter has the ability to bring him down for his powers have greatly increased since than.
He supposed he could die if he suffers from an epic heartbreak, he thought sardonically to himself. He had not love for a long time and he was beginning to forget how it feels to be love and to love. Maybe that’s what a creature of the night is meant to be…loveless and cold to everything. He was cursed with the ability to remember an eternality of memories, sentiments, characteristics and emotions that only humans feel. They should be shed away, yet, it is something he never managed to do.
He stood up and wept the remnants of blood from the side of his mouth, staring into the darkness wondering where his journey will lead him to…he knows the hunt has began, the scent of adrenaline pumping through the body of his nemesis teased his senses.
The other is near.

Yunho swung his body around and was just in time to avoid the bullet that whizzed by his temple, grazing the skin there. He searched for a place that would be high enough for him to gain some leverage for a better aim at his target. It is getting harder to defeat them nowadays. The advance in technology has equipped them with weapons that made even a vampire that just went through the first evolution difficult to defeat.
He spotted the ledge of the balcony above him and was glad that no one was home to witness a fight between the creatures of folklore. He leaped with lighting speed. His gun already pointed towards his target and before the other could blink, the silver bullet compressed with UV was already embedded in his flesh, burrowing into his heart at top speed. Yunho watched with cold indifference as the creature gave an ear piercing scream and crumbled into dull grey ash. He stepped off the ledge and landed gracefully on the ground, still basking in his little victory. He did not notice the man standing quietly behind him, until, he turned and bumped into him.
Yunho was about to apologize but the words faded off as he picked up the all too familiar scent of the undead and a powerful aura that he could not name lingering around the other. His instincts took over immediately and the arm with the gun shot up, letting off a round of bullets straight into the stranger’s chest. He watched expecting the same results as his previous target but the other only blinked in bewilderment before landing in a soft thud on the ground in a faint.
Yunho could only gaped at the other laying by his feet and tried to figure out what was going on. He kicked the other to make sure that he was not feigning before he shook out the remaining bullets from his gun. He tumbled the silver pieces around in his hands to assure himself that he did picked the right bullets instead of the others made of titanium. Yap, they are Cross bullets…no doubt about it. Shit, please tell me I did not kill a human! Yunho thought feeling hysterical for a moment before he remembers that his acute sense of smell would never go wrong and no human carries that unique scent like they do.
His eyes well adapted to the darkness peered downwards, trying to get a better look at the other he has gunned down and found the features of the other utterly exquisite. The stranger’s skin was lit luminous by the moonlight and his sharp nose and delicate chin tells of a feminine frame. Yunho had never encountered any who processed such ethereal beauty and his aura tells Yunho that this other had been around for a very long time. He’s good. I can’t even sense him nearby. Could it be…” Yunho left his thought unfinished and debated with himself on whether to bring the other back to the coven.

Yuchun would have suffered a heart-attack if he was capable of having one. He stared after Yunho as he ascended the staircase with his ‘baggage’.
“Hey, you better explain to me that thing that you brought back. You’re supposed to kill them. Not bring them back.” He said as he followed Yunho up the stairs ignoring his attempt at avoiding his queries.
“Least I forget…aren’t we of the same kind?” Yunho threw the question back at him.
“There’s a difference, I don’t take human lives to satisfy my hunger. I buy my food like all normal beings do…from the supermarket.” Yuchun shot back at him, indignant to be considered what he despised the most. If that damn monster had not bitten him, he wouldn’t be here in the first place although he had to admit that that monster was also the one who gave him a place to call home.
“Look, he’s got Cross bullets in him and he’s still here, aren’t you curious?” Yunho questioned and nodded his head when Yuchun widen his eyes and raised his eyebrows.
“Hn?” Yuchun grunted as he approached Yunho rapidly, his eyes now focused on the other dangling from his shoulders.
“That’s what I would like to know too…maybe Changmin can help. Is he in?” Yunho asked and hoped that the boy was not gallivanting around town. Se7en would be displease to know that he was out having fun instead of training with Siwon. He wonders if he had made a mistake of pairing them up together…they are still young and held idealistic views about the world they lived in. But he has no doubt that they would outgrow this phase when they mature although he wonders why half a millennia has not helped in that area.
“I’ll get him.” Yuchun said as he headed down to the basement. He opened the heavy steel door with ease and headed down the winding stairs. The pounding music coming from the end of it told him that the youngest was not in the best of moods.
Yuchun walked into the huge cavern and spotted Changmin reclining besides the coffin that he had bought as a joke to commemorate their macabre existence. Sadly, only Junsu appreciated the joke. Se7en had dumped the offending coffin in here and it now serves as a ‘Reflection Area’. They only use it when they wanted some peace from the rest of the members or to clear their thoughts in the morbid quiet of the coffin.
“Hey…Yunho’s looking for you.” Yuchun shouted over the din, positive that the boy’s acute hearing would catch his words. He shouted again and walked over to the stereo to lower down the volume as Changmin stubbornly ignored him.
“Changmin, I said Yunho’s…” Yuchun repeated. If he was not wrong, he must have had a fight with his partner again.
“I know...I heard you the first time.” Changmin drawled out, annoyed that he could not even have a moment of privacy. He had another argument Siwon again…it was getting more of a challenge to work together. Their opinions about their kind was pushing them further apart day by day and what started as a great partnership now turned sour.
“Wanna tell me what’s wrong?” Yuchun asks, concerned if he should let the boy face Yunho in such a state. The elder was highly perceptive and fully aware of the growing animosity between Changmin and Siwon.
“That should be Yunho’s line. What happened anyway?” He asked.
“He bought something back and we’re not sure what’s going on. That thing seems to be immune to the Cross bullets.” Yuchun said and scrunched his brows together, still in wonder over what he had seen.
“Immune? That’s interesting. Let’s go.” Changmin said, his interest piqued and was distracted for the moment from the stinging words that Siwon said to him at the club.
“Yuchun…” Changmin called out to him.
“Yeah?” Yuchun replied dismissively.
“Can you stop referring to them as ‘things’? We are those ‘things’ as well…” Changmin said. He understands that Yuchun still finds it hard to accept what he has become. A creature of the dark but it is a fact and he will have to learn how to accept it one day. He walked forward catching up with the older man. “You know Yuchun. When you create an illusion of reality, it becomes your reality. Shove that reality down your throat and mull over it. But not for too long… you will have to wake up one day.”
“Yeah…whatever.” Yuchun replied hating how much the younger man understands him. He shrugged Changmin’s hand off his shoulder and gave a playful shove at the young man. “You know sometimes, I really find it hard to believe you are younger than me.”

Immediately, Changmin could tell what the other was. It seems that there was also another reason why Yunho bought him back.
“If you can’t get rid of him, you shouldn’t bring him back either. He existence is a threat to us.” Changmin said as his eyes narrowed. He was sure the other laying on his leader’s bed was one of the ancients. The aura radiating off him was telling enough.
“Do you know that he’s…” Yunho said, directing the question at Changmin and understanding the implications that he implied straight away. If this one was an ancient, keeping him here would cause a lot of trouble for Belandsa. He glanced at the slender figure still in a deep sleep.
“He could be though we may be wrong about it.” Yuchun answered. He had heard of the Ancients before but had never believed that they still exist. Wasn’t Se7en already considered an Ancient? Yuchun thinks he is definitely old enough.
“Have you informed Se7en?” Yuchun asked, momentarily forgetting that their master was a mind-reader.
“He already knows, I sensed him looking in just now…He’s on the way back.” Yunho said. Se7en was connected to all of them, they shared his blood and in the process an undying oath to be loyal to his clan. Nothing was stronger than the blood bond they share.
